Who Created God? : Answering Common Atheist Objections
Firstly it logically fallacious to deny something is created/designed/made, because one cannot explain where the designer came from.
An Astronaut would be justified in attributing to Aliens or Intelligent Beings, a stitched and sewn garment found on a remote planet with designs and patterns upon it.
Not knowing how the designers were themselves designed, would certainly not discount their existence!
Secondly some Atheists concur that an Uncaused ‘something’ can come into existence.Otherwise, they argue that some form of Universe might be Eternal, and Uncreated.
The argument in this case boils down to looking at the properties of God vs the Cosmos and determining which of these is Uncaused and Eternal, and which must be caused and temporal.
The ‘Who made God?’ trope can easily be reversed on the Atheist. We could just as well ask “…if the Universe created life, whom created the Universe?” but that wouldn’t help the argument progress very much.
We have plenty of examples of things that possess qualities and properties in their own right and pass these on to other beings. Theists also understand that God exists by his own nature and passes existence to all other existents.
For instance, water gives wetness to other things, but is wet by its own nature. Nothing wets water.
Light illuminates everything, but nothing illuminates light. Light possesses illumination in its own nature. God causes existence, but nothing else causes him to exist. His existence is his fundamental property.
Thirdly, an infinite regress of causes is logically Impossible. Thus an Uncaused Creator must exist. Why? Because if we assume God has a creator, so would that creator and so on. However if you did not have an Eternal First Cause, starting creation, but itself being uncreated, then the process of creation would never begin anywhere and so nothing- including the Universe- would ever be created.
An Uncreated Cause is a logical necessity than cannot be objectively denied.
Fourthly, the Universe could have been different. Its laws and states could have been different. It is possible that nothing at all might have existed. Nothing about the Universe can explain itself. It must have an explanation beyond it for why it exists, why it changes as it does and so on.
There has to be something that determines the states, laws and conditions in the Universe since only some possibilities are actualised from unlimited possibilities. What determines these possibilities? It can only be a Being with free will i.e. God.
Finally, God is outside of time, so can be Eternal whilst the Universe exists in time so logically did have a beginning .
However even if the Universe was past eternal (and it is most likely not ) as it is constantly changing, it still requires an Actualiser with Free Will i.e. God to sustain it and choose how it changes, moment to moment. Without God we cannot explain any Universe regardless of its age.
The Universe cannot ‘just be’ while God ‘must be’ to explain why we have this Universe and not another, or indeed why anything exists at all.
Say: “He is Allah, the One and Only. Allah is Independent of all and all are dependent on Him. Neither has He an offspring nor is He the offspring of anyone. And none is equal with Him in rank. (Al Quran, 112)
